Manager, Publishing Licensing, US

Spotify is looking for an exceptional candidate to join our licensing team in New York. Reporting to the Director of U.S. Publishing Licensing, this role will assist with negotiating and managing commercial licensing relationships, deal tracking, and the implementation of U.S. music publishing licensing agreements.

In addition, the role will be heavily involved in Spotify’s development of administration and reporting systems and ensuring that publishing royalties flow from Spotify to the creative community. It will require cross-functional work and a deep understanding of the US publishing landscape, and preferably a good understanding of the publishing landscape ex. US.

What you’ll do

  • You will be responsible for supporting the commercial side of licensing including Publishers and PROs within the US.

  • You will work closely with the Publishing Operations and Legal Licensing teams to help execute and track agreements.

  • You will work closely with internal stakeholders (finance, reporting, growth, and analytics teams) to ensure agreements are consistent with the company’s strategic plans.

  • You will support the operationalization of music publishing strategy and agreements across Spotify in the U.S., including deal implementation and account management of Spotify’s relationships with publishers, PROs, and societies.

  • You will work closely with Spotify’s R&D, data and reporting teams to support best practices on matching, reporting systems, royalty flows and data transparency in relation to U.S. licensing deals.

  • You will work closely and communicate regularly with Publishing Operations, R&D, Rights & Clearance, business and legal affairs department on projects assigned by Director, Publishing U.S.  

  • You will record and track rights information and all aspects related to licensing. Function as project leader on special assignments and maintain tracking reports for all assigned programs/projects and ensure that licenses are executed and implemented in a timely manner.

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. MBA or JD preferred.

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a business affairs, rights & clearances, or licensing capacity at a music publisher, digital music service, record label or collecting society.

  • A deep understanding of the US publishing space and regulatory environment, how it has developed in the last 10 years, and the challenges ahead.

  • Knowledge of the wider global publishing landscape and how rights flow.

  • Good experience with and understanding of the tech and media sectors, preferably relating to music.

  • Comprehensive understanding of music rights and expertise in licensing for all types of media platforms is a plus.

  • In-house experience, and work with digital distribution of music involving online services, apps, and innovative technologies is preferred.

  • Commercial awareness and ability to prioritize under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills and proven ability to multitask and prioritize.

  • Demonstrated written & oral communication skills to draft sensitive client communications and develop internal and client presentation.

  • Strong research, analytical & problem-solving skills with the ability to build and explain financial models and build tracking reports.

  • Ability to accurately analyze contract and license agreements, draw conclusions from working knowledge of issues that impact the area of rights licensing.

  • Self-starter with excellent analytical and organizational skillset.

  • Team leader and team player.

  • Ability to adapt quickly. The industry is changing fast and it is critical to be able to adapt to new market conditions and circumstances.

  • Willingness to travel.

  • Well-organized with the ability to plan and deliver on tight deadlines with attention to detail.

  • Fluent in English. Business-fluency in a second language is a plus.

  • Huge music fan and a daily Spotify user.
